Procrastination Isn’t Always Bad

We all know that dreaded shame that creeps up when you remember that project you are putting off. But what if that procrastination is trying to tell you something? Maybe you’re not ready for launching the project just yet. Maybe there are some kinks that need to be ironed out. Or maybe- just maybe- that creative idea is already percolating in the background. Perhaps it’s getting cooked in your subconscious. Some ideas need extra time before they are ready to be put on paper but that doesn’t mean they aren’t already being worked out in your system. It is true that sometimes people are just procrastinating out of fear but my point is, get curious about the procrastination, don’t judge it. Adding shame is certainly not going to help the creative idea flow better. And even if you are simply putting things off out fear, get curious about the fear.

Changing the scenery

Sometimes when I’m having a block and can’t bring myself to write, I change the place where I’m working. I go to my favorite cafe or the Amsterdam library that overlooks the pier. Changing the visuals around yourself can jolt the brain out of its block. Whenever people imagine an ideal writing space, they think of something like a cabin surrounded by trees or water. That tells us that sometimes we need a different space to let the ideas flow better. Create your own cabin by going to a cafe that overlooks trees and water.
